The Carmel Fire: One Year Later...

Dec 5, 2011

The was barely a dry eye in the auditorium.

In a moving ceremony on campus, the University of Haifa marked the one-year anniversary of the Carmel Fire which killed dozens and came perilously close to engulfing the campus atop Mt. Carmel.

Scholarships were given to 44 students, each dedicated in memory of the 44 victims of the disaster.  On stage, each student beneficiary embraced a family member of one the victims.  Slowly, the stage filled with dozens of people as emotions ran high.

"Through this project, my life is connected with yours with the hope of bringing some consolation. I know that I will be strengthened and be a better person by getting to know you and hearing about Danny," said Tamar Chakim, who received a scholarship in name of Sergeant Major Danny Chayat who died in the fires.

The ceremony also provided hope.  It included a notable panel discussion with Rona Ramon, wife of the late Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, and General Yitzhak Brick, from the University of Haifa's Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences.  Both spoke with grace and courage about the hardships felt by the bereaved families while also noting the possibilities to go from crisis to rebirth.

The scholarships were generously provided by Mr. Leon Charney.
