University of Haifa professor and Israeli women’s rights pioneer gives major talk in Tenafly, NJ.
Before nearly 100 attendees at Temple Sinai in Tenafly, NJ, University of Haifa Professor Emerita Dr. Marilyn Safir gave a fascinating talk on the status of women in Israel. Her insights, based on newly released data, spanned various topics within the field of women’s studies; their historical and modern contributions to the IDF, their progress in the upper echelons of Israeli academia, and their status in the context of the global feminist movement.
Attendees also engaged in a spirited question-and-answer session with Professor Safir. Among the topics discussed: the evolution of gender roles in the modern state of Israel, family planning initiatives, and the historical impact of kibbutzim in shaping Israel’s women’s movement.
“I learned a lot about the University of Haifa tonight because of Professor Safir,” said Connie Garcia, an attendee and Bergen County resident. “I had no idea there were all of these progressive kinds of topics being studied there. I’m really glad I came out tonight.”
Professor Safir, currently Director of KIDMA-The Project for the Advancement of Women in Israel, will next travel to Florida as part of her ASUH speaking tour.
