Nine University of Haifa undergraduates participated in the 31st Annual Norris and Margery Bendetson Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship (EPIIC) conference hosted by the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University in Medford, MA in late February.
The theme of this year’s 5-day conference, “Europe in Turmoil”, attracted more than 70 students from 16 countries ranging from China and Russia to Iraq and Ecuador.
The University of Haifa contingent — Noga Akerman, Sagi Biton, Shir Donitz, Irin Hay, Meital Itach, Alon Meir, Paz Ohana, Ofer Rahav and Einat Rozenberg — were selected from a much larger group of students in the Raveh-Ravid Foundation program under the auspices of the University of Haifa’s Social Leadership Unit.
Students chosen to represent the University met on a weekly basis over the course of an entire semester. Their preparation included extensive reading and seminar discussions of the conference theme and topic for the year. The culmination of this training was the Israeli delegation’s presentation at the EPIIC’s student symposium.
JoAnn Bendetson, daughter-in-law of Norris and Margery and devoted friend of both Tufts and the University of Haifa, generously helped finance the trip to the U.S., as she has done for the past five years. Professor Zach Levey, Chair of the Division of International Relations at the School of Political Science, accompanied the University of Haifa delegation.
