The University of Haifa recently inaugurated the new laboratories of the Helmsley Charitable Trust Mediterranean Sea Research Center at Sdot Yam, located on the Mediterranean about 30 miles south of Haifa adjacent to Caesarea. The new laboratories are headed by Dr. Dan Tchernov, Chair of the Department of Marine Biology at the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences.
The laboratories will focus on shallow water research and will monitor the ecology and species of the shallow sea as well as man’s impact on the marine environment. Prof. Zvi Ben Avraham, Head of the Mediterranean Sea Research Center of Israel and Founding Director of the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences, stated that the importance of such a monitoring station is vast and it will serve as a fitting meeting place for researchers and allow them to collaborate and expand our knowledge for the benefit of all.
Prof. Ben Avraham also expressed his gratitude to the Helmsley Charitable Trust for sharing the University’s vision for the Marine Science in Israel.
