Professor Gustavo S. Mesch, an expert on communications technology and online social networks, has been selected by the University’s Senate Committee to be the next Rector of the University of Haifa. Prof. Mesch will assume office at the start of the academic year in October, succeeding Prof. David Faraggi, who has served with distinction as Rector since 2010.
“I am grateful to the Senate for the confidence they have entrusted in me,” said Professor Mesch. “My central goal is to work to promote academic and research excellence in the University together with the President-Elect, Prof. Ron Robin”.
Amos Shapira, President of the University, congratulated the prospective Rector. “From my knowledge of Prof. Mesch, he has the qualities and experience needed to lead University academic research, together with President-Elect Prof. Ron Robin and all the University staff, to new heights.”
A Professor of Sociology and Dean of the Herta and Paul Amir Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Mesch previously served as Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropolgy and as Head of the MA program in Technology and Society.
His research interests are technology and society, social effects of new media, youth internet culture, social networks on-line and offline. He is currently researching patterns of cyber fraud scams, identity theft and the use of preventive measures, in a study funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Israel.
Professor Mesch received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Haifa and a PhD degree in Sociology from the Ohio State University in 1993. He has served as Chair of the Information & Communication Section of the American Sociological Association and Editor-in-Chief of the Sociological Focus, the official Journal of the North Central Sociological Association.
