A group of Midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy are in residence at the University of Haifa this summer, enrolled in intensive courses in Arabic and taking part in cultural activities and tours of Israel.
The University and the Naval Academy have entered into a long-term agreement. For each of the next five years two cohorts of 10-15 cadets will be participating in the International School Study Abroad Program.
The cadets, all of whom are study Arabic at the Naval Academy, are enrolled in the Arabic Language Summer Program that is designed for those who want to immerse themselves in an intensive language acquisition experience that is both personally enriching as well as academically demanding.
Classes meet four days a week, Monday-Thursday, with several hours of homework every day. Students take four different courses — Modern Standard Arabic, Spoken Arabic, Culture of the Middle East and Practice in Spoken Arabic
The University provides a full-time Coordinator who addresses the needs and questions of all participants, implements the Co-Curricular Activity Program around Haifa, and escorts all organized trips and tours both within the city and around the country. The program included afternoon culture tours and weekend trips throughout the country to introduce students to Israeli society and culture.
