University of Haifa Enhances Mediterranean Sea Research Capabilities with Purchase of an ROV

ROV leopard_Photo 2With the recent purchase of a state-of-the-art underwater electric remotely operated vehicle (ROV) the University of Haifa will have a technological resource unlike any other in Israel.

The ROV will become a vital asset for the University and for all educational institutions and government agencies in the University of Haifa led Mediterranean Sea Research Center of Israel.

The purchase was made possible by the generous support of The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to the University of Haifa.  The 3,000 meter-rated ROV, the Leopard model manufactured by Saab Seaeye, is capable of sophisticated survey and monitoring in both shallow and deep water.

The ROV will be used for scientific study, education and research including environmental monitoring, marine archaeology and other types of marine research, according to Ben Herzberg, Chief Marine Technologies Engineer at The Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa.  He also sees it being of interest to operators in Israel’s relatively new oil and gas sector, along with other collaborative projects.
