Internationally-renown University of Haifa Professor Sammy Smooha, an expert in comparative ethnic relations, provided fascinating new data on the state of Arab-Jewish relations in Israel at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Israeli-Arab Issues.
Speaking before a crowd of 75 participants, Dr. Smooha shared his latest findings drawn from his forthcoming Index of Arab-Jewish Relations in Israel 2011. The Index is a research project based on public opinion polls of Israel’s Jewish and Arab populations between 2003 and 2009. Among his conclusions is the notion that Israel is still a deeply divided society and that these divisions are reflected in Israeli institutions, culture, national identity, and economic status.
Dr. Smooha is a professor in the University of Haifa’s Sociology Department and is currently on sabbatical at Brandeis University. Widely published, he was an Israel Prize laureate for sociology in 2008.
