Poverty is a serious concern in Israel and the University of Haifa is helping to do something about it.
Students at UH’s School of Social Work have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local community in an effort to address the rising poverty rate in Israel. To combat the epidemic, the School of Social Work, in conjunction with the Municipality of Haifa and families from poverty areas within the city, established the Haifa Partnership for the Eradication of Poverty.
Students work with social workers to inform families of their personal rights, offer information on services, and develop community projects such as community kitchens, to alleviate poverty levels. The partnership also includes a civic engagement component during which students work to notify the City Council, the Knesset and the public about social issues that threaten to increase poverty in Israel.
According to an annual survey conducted by the National Insurance Institute of Israel, Israel contains the highest poverty levels among industrialized nations with one-third of its children being raised in poverty. Friends of the University of Haifa have the opportunity to contribute to the University’s mission.
