President Amos Shapira Visits the West Coast

Amos Shapira, President of the University of Haifa, visited with donors, new prospects, and old friends during a fast-paced four-day West Coast visit in late November.

President Shapira was the featured speaker at an Educational Forum and Dinner at the Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA. attended by more than 250 members and guests. The event was arranged and hosted by Annette Shapiro, a member of the ASUH West Coast Steering Committee.

President Shapira spoke to more than 250 at the Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA.

Citing the diverse student population at the University of Haifa as a potential model for an Israel characterized by tolerance and co-existence, Shapira said, "If students from the IDF can share knowledge with a Moslem woman in a burka in classes than there is hope that society in Israel can get along. The University of Haifa," he explained, "is a mosaic for all of Israel society".

His remarks also included a description of the effects of the Gaza War on the campus last summer. One of his saddest responsibilities was to visit a grieving faculty member who lost his grandson in the war. "It's just not natural for a grandfather to bury his grandson," he said. Distinguished UH benefactors Younes and Soraya Nazarian (seated) enjoyed dinner with President Shapira (left) in Los Angeles. ASUH National Executive Director Yefet Ozery and West Coast Director Sherri Morr are in the second row .

In Los Angeles President Shapira discussed a possible UCLA - University of Haifa Student Exchange program with UCLA Chancellor Eugene Block, thanked board members of the Magbit Foundation for their longtime support of scholarships for UH students, met with Amit Kleinberger, CEO of Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, and updated Richard Sandler, President of the Milken Family Foundation, supporters of education and the arts in the U.S. and Israel, on research at the University.

President Shapira also briefed UH volunteer leaders and benefactors Maurice Kanbar and Arthur Wachtel in San Francisco.
