What is the legal and proportionate response when a gang of terrorists infiltrate your borders in one of the most horrific terror attacks in recent history, leaving more than 1,200 dead and more than 200 abducted? These are the questions Israeli legal warfare experts are grappling with in the aftermath of the October 7 terror attacks.
Join American Society of the University of Haifa (ASUH) for a fascinating discussion with former Attorney General of Israel and one of the top legal minds in the country, Avihai Mandelblit. Mandelblit will be speaking alongside Dov Weissglas, Chair of the Executive Committee of University of Haifa and former Director-General of Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office under Ariel Sharon, and ASUH’s CEO Naomi Reinharz.
Mandelblit served as the country’s Attorney General between 2016-22 and had a storied career in the Israel Defense Forces’ legal system where he served as the Chief Military Advocate General and Cabinet Secretary. He is also extremely familiar with the Gaza Strip, where he was a former military prosecutor for the Southern Command and served as a judge on the military court of the Gaza region.
In this unique perspective on the war, Mandelblit will share how Israel is adhering to the laws of war and the obstacles associated with doing so. He’ll also share his thoughts on what should happen next for the region and the people of Gaza, as Israel continues its war with Hamas.
